The 1950s

Some of you may remember the so-called Record syringes with metal ends, glass barrel and metal plunger: a somewhat cumbersome device.

In the 1950's Elias Vantini, a Venetian engineer who worked in glass, produced the first interchangeable glass syringes.  They were as revolutionary in 1956 as was the laser technology in the late 70s.

We introduced these syringes to Australia: they were cheaper, easier to clean, and more convenient to use than Record syringes.

By 1960 most hospitals in Australia were using interchangeable glass syringes, and they continued to do so until they were replaced, for general purposes, by the disposable plastic syringe.
